How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
Fantasy must be absolutely the most fun genre to write in. We fantasy writers can let our imaginations run wild building new worlds, creating extraordinary creatures, and devising otherworldly adventures. As much as possible, I try to do my research and keep my creations believable, so as not to stretch the bounds of suspended disbelief to the breaking point, but for the most part, I just want the reader to have an awesome time in a completely unique environment.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
The best advice I ever received about writing was “just finish it.” I had several half-finished novels languishing in a drawer, and my current story seemed to be going nowhere. A local author visited my son’s school and over lunch she convinced me that finishing the first draft–no matter how ugly–was 80 percent of the battle. I took her advice and even though the story shifted and changed over the course of the drafting process, and I did about a million rewrites, I finally finished my first novel, TRANSCENDER. It felt great!
Prior to becoming an author and publisher of young adult fiction, Vicky Savage enjoyed many diverse occupations; flagman on a construction crew, trial lawyer, and healthcare company executive, to name a few. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctorate from the Florida State University College of Law. She has resided in seven different states and London, England.
Vicky currently lives on the west coast of Florida with her boyishly charming husband, her handsome son, and two effervescent dogs. She is diligently working on Illuminosity, Book 3 of the Transcender Trilogy.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I believe that, at some point, everyone wishes to possess magical powers of some kind! Don’t you? If I could choose my power, I’d choose to have the ability to travel among different dimensions and visit new and exotic worlds. Also, I think it would be fun to experience different lives simultaneously. Of course, if I could choose a life to experience, even temporarily, it would be that of a princess or queen (or, let’s face it, a rock star). So, I gave my protagonist this remarkable ability, and presto, she wound up in a parallel universe where she was a princess! How cool is that?
