What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I grew up reading fantastic stories that helped me to escape. I fell in love with HG Wells, Jules Verne, Tolkien, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allan Poe. Later I found Allan Dean Foster, Raymond E Feist and Janny Wurst etc could take me to amazing places. I was working a boring office job at the time and started coming up with ideas for my own stories. I wrote the prologue to 'Wizards' one afternoon without any idea of where this story would go. I just wrote and let the story unfold and I loved working this way, not knowing where it was going to end.

The Illusions of Vaeleren Redsteel by Justin Rhodes

Posted By Fantasy Books Curator Leave a Comment

Ever since Vaeleren was little, she’s always wanted to be a hero and have books written about her just like her great-grandfather. She knows in her heart that she’s destined for greatness, especially since she’s been able to create illusions from a young age. The only problem is her father, Aldric, has always been content with his sedentary life and never lets Vaeleren venture too far from home…

Until a malicious stranger comes to town and her life is changed forever. Finding her father cursed by powerful magic, Vaeleren knows what she has to do: travel with her father in search of a cure while using her powers to mask his curse. She can finally be the hero she’s always wanted to be.

Vaeleren will soon learn, however, that things are not always what they seem and what she wants will come at a cost she might not be willing to pay.

Targeted Age Group:: YA readers age 12 to 14

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
As an avid reader myself and a former bookstore worker, I've spent countless hours reading Fantasy and YA Fantasy titles. I'd always wanted to be an author myself, so I took the leap and committed myself to finishing my first novel. I even went as far as taking a year abroad in New Zealand for inspiration.

On a more personal note, Vaeleren's story is very dear to me. When I was 22 years old I lost my father to suicide. Creating Vaeleren's journey allowed me to process some very heavy feelings. I may not have been able to save my father from his demons, but allowing Vaeleren the opportunity to try provided a much needed sense of catharsis.

Under an Azure Sky by Wil Chan

They call me…Hero…Mercenary…Dragon Slayer.
But that wasn’t always the case.
There was a time when I thought that dragons were beautiful…

During my childhood, I believed that I was friends with a dragon, except the dragon never knew of this friendship. Days after my thirteenth birthday, my secret was no longer mine to keep. Soldiers arrived to slay the dragon so that a feudal lord could make his name amongst the nine kingdoms. It ended in abject failure. They were left to soak in a bloodbath of their own making. In a rage, the dragon destroyed the place that I called home, and killed the people that I called family. She also dismantled a thing that I called love. Reborn under a mound of ashen corpses, my empty shell vowed vengeance, forging a fiery path of retribution that could not be undone. Not by my own design, I inadvertently became a slayer of dragons. Curiously, dragon slaying isn’t my next job…
A princess is being held for ransom at a goblin fort. Wearing the stolen armour of a goblin knight, I attempt to rescue her to claim my prize. When I met her, she was Winter. Now, she is Spring. Maybe I can learn to love again…

Targeted Age Group:: 8-12

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I’ve always been interested in stories that explored fate and destiny. Why we are who we are and if there is any choice in that. Wishless started out as an idea for a picture book that focused on the tooth fairy that just grew into a novel as I started poking at the idea and asking why.

The Princelings of the East Books 1-3 by Jemima Pett

The Princelings of the East Books 1-3 by Jemima Pett

A time tunnel, a pirate king, a lost city. In three separate adventures, Princelings Fred and George set out to solve trifling problems, and uncover dangerous and sometimes desperate foes, each with his or her own agenda, threatening the peace of the Realms.

The Princelings of the East: the saga starts with Fred and George leaving their cosy Castle in the Marsh. They encounter the mysterious cola vendor Hugo, the playboy Prince Lupin, and the over-worked innkeeper Victor, and have to use their own wits to decide who to trust, and how to prevent their ordered society descending into chaos.

The Princelings and the Pirates sees our heroes setting out to discover what has gone wrong at Castle Dimerie. It’s a simple errand that ends in kidnap, shipwreck, and a battle in which no quarter is given. Princeling Fred rescues a damsel in distress, not that she thinks she is.

The Princelings and the Lost City introduces George to the delights of flying, and Fred to the tortures of true love. Their inventions and experiments take a back seat as the puzzle of the Lost City and its all-female society lead to questions that may be too difficult to solve.

And having experienced a time paradox in the first adventure, George is under pressure to achieve a new method of providing the world with energy from strawberry juice. It’s a project that, for all the benefits it brings, creates far-reaching changes in their ordered society.

Praise for the books

“Princelings of the East is a suspense-filled mystery strong on character development, with a deliciously complex and engaging plot, that is sure to be enjoyed by older tweens and adults alike.” (Mother Daughter Book Reviews)

“The plot is absolutely brilliant. It’s sci-fi mixed with mystery and action, and I would recommend it to everyone!!!!” (Joshua A, aged 13, for Published Bestsellers)

“Another hazardous adventure, complete with swashbuckling pirates and beautiful princesses. As in the first book, the story is narrated in a fun and engaging style. The writing throughout is top quality and I love the witty chapter sub-headings.” (Wendy Leighton-Porter, author of the Shadows from the Past series)

“Lost City, book 3 in the [series], is a great read for those who love fantasy with young male protagonists. The plot is new, interesting, and will engage your mind in the story. A great work was created by the author with this trilogy. (Anna Dye, Readers’ Favorite)

These three adventures are also available as standalone ebooks, paperbacks and now as audiobooks (no 3 is in preparation).
This is a revised box set edition of the three titles, complete with their chapter illustrations, updated to match the audiobooks.

The Last Noah by David Cuff

Robin and Miranda go to bed in their separate rooms, but wake up somewhere else. Somewhere that is alien and way outside their comfort zone. However, as they discover more about their new surroundings and have several unusual and action-packed adventures, they begin to suspect that all may not be as it first seemed. As the days progress, their passion for each other grows as their relationship develops emotionally and physically. However, is someone or something watching them? Why do they keep discovering things which don’t feel right? And what’s the story behind the various androids who they meet during their adventures?

As well as being a fast-moving science fiction action and adventure novel, this book touches on several social topics. Covert surveillance; humanity’s journey after the extinction of Earth; how AI might develop; and whether humans would, one day, upload their minds into robots (and, if so, what sort of society might result?)

“A unique take on the sci-fi genre which throws questions at you from the word go.” “A good mystery SiFi with a conspiracy tone running through out the story.” “The suspense is gripping.” “Fun book; Good read, interesting characters and plot.” [Readers’ reviews of The Last Noah]

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I started writing in 2017 and started with epic fantasy. It was a hobby driven by a desire to share stories in the genres I grew up with. Then sometime in the middle of 2018, I decided to try writing a fantasy tale for children. Just in time for Christmas. There will be other books narrating Frieda's adventures. Once I find the time to write them.
